Your anxiety doesn’t have to get in the way of your dental health – our friendly dentists have ways to help you
Having your teeth and gums cared for regularly is very important. And if you have been recommended treatment, it is in your best interest that you receive it. However, some patients are extremely nervous about visiting the dentist, even for a check-up. That is where we can help.
Here at Bell Yard Dental we appreciate that some patients may be a little anxious about coming to see us. For that reason we offer various ways in which we can help you to relax when you visit us.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is given to our patients by injection through the back of the hand or into the arm. Depending on the treatment you are having, the appropriate dose will be administered by a dental professional. Despite making you drowsy and unaware of your treatment, this form of sedation still enables you to cooperate with your dentist.
Please note: IV sedation can have a lasting effect on your body for a number of hours after your treatment. You will therefore require someone to drive you home from your appointment, and you will not be able to drink alcohol or work machinery for at least 24 hours.
‘Relative analgesia’ – sometimes referred to as inhalation sedation – is when you breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (laughing gas). This form of sedation will induce a drowsy yet pleasant feeling whilst your dentist puts you at ease. You will remain conscious at all times, but will experience no discomfort during your treatment.
Administered through a nosepiece, you cannot overdose on this mixture as it quickly leaves the body if you breathe one or two breaths of ordinary air. Due to this fact there are no after effects of using this form of sedation, and you are able to drive just 15 minutes after the end of your treatment.
If you are particularly nervous about visiting our surgery, please speak with a member of our friendly team. We are more than happy to discuss your concerns with you and explain the options you have available to you.
